Most people start meal prepping with whatever containers they already own. It works for a while, and then meal prep stops. Here's how to build a container system that actually holds up through the week and helps you continue the habit.

How to Choose Meal Prep Containers (and Actually Use Them)

Most meal prep routines start with a burst of Sunday motivation and a chaotic dig through the kitchen drawer for whatever containers happen to be available. By Wednesday, the system falls apart. You reach into the fridge to find a single serving of leftover chicken rattling around in a massive tub, or a lid that never quite sealed has let last night's garlic and onion roast work its way through the whole fridge by Tuesday.

The reheating step makes it worse. Decanting bolognese from a plastic tub into a ceramic bowl to safely use the microwave adds washing-up you were trying to avoid midweek, and worn plastic holds on to turmeric stains and sheds microplastics when you scrub harder.

The fix is not more IG reels and motivation on Sunday. There are two ways to meal prep, and they need different things from a container. Portioning, where you divide a cooked batch into individual serves immediately. Or batch cooking, where you store the full volume and draw from it across the week. Both approaches work. Getting that distinction clear, and choosing containers that suit it, is where most guides stop being useful.

What to look for in a meal prep container

The material is the starting point. Stainless steel and glass are the two options that hold up to repeated fridge and freezer use without going porous or holding onto smells. Both work and behave differently from the rest of this list, which is why the choice matters. Independent finished-product testing against a food contact standard tells you more than a claim on the label.

The lid is where most systems fail: a warped seal, a smell that spreads through the fridge instead of staying in the container. When we decided to find our own containers, we chose a tempered glass lid with an LFGB silicone seal, over coloured silicone or opaque steel, so you can see what's stored without opening the container, and a removable silicone plug in the lid rather than one fixed in place. A fixed plug is harder to clean and, if it splits, means replacing the whole lid. A removable one comes out for cleaning, vents pressure safely in the microwave, and can be swapped on its own if it wears out.

Microwave compatibility catches most people out, usually after they have already bought the containers. Standard stainless steel arcs in a conventional microwave. Glass has no such problem and goes in without a thought. Some steel containers are engineered with rounded profiles to avoid arcing, but that is the exception, worth checking before you buy, rather than assuming.

Stackability matters in two directions: full containers in the fridge, empty ones in the cupboard. A rectangular shape with a flat base lets you maximise the space in a crowded fridge. Containers that nest or stack closely when empty save considerably more cupboard space than those that don't.

Choosing the right sizes

There are two ways to run a meal prep routine, and each wants something different from a container.

Portioning means dividing a cooked batch into individual serves straight away, usually into containers that are all the same size. Cook the spaghetti bolognese, split it three ways, and one comes out each day. The container's job is to give you a fixed volume for each meal, whether at home or at work.

Batch cooking is different. You store the full volume you cooked and draw from it across the week, sometimes eating straight from the container, sometimes portioning on the day. Here, size does the work, since one container serves several jobs across several days rather than one.

For batch cooking, three to six volume ranges cover most households.

A small container, in the 500ml to 700ml range, fills a gap most sets leave open. Most meal prep and food storage sets sit above 1000ml, built around one large portion. That leaves nowhere for the small stuff that needs its own space: a protein that you don't want sitting next to fresh cut veggies, a side that gets soggy pressed against everything else. We sized the 600ml specifically for that, and for overnight oats, Bircher muesli, or cut fruit heading out the door, a leak-proof stand-in for the mason jar with one real advantage: a mason jar cannot go in the microwave, and this can.

A medium container up to 1600ml is where a full adult portion actually sits: a generous serving of pasta, couscous, salad or soup. It also works as an ingredient container, holding two or three portions of something prepped ahead, like stir-fried vegetables or marinated protein.

A large one from 1700ml up is the proper batch cooking size: a full pot of bolognese sauce, a tray of lasagne, roast chicken, a large batch of lentil tabouli. It holds the whole cook and gets drawn down meal by meal, served straight from it or decanted on the day.

Container count comes down to approach. Portioning five identical lunches requires five containers of the same size. Batch cooking needs fewer overall, but relies more heavily on the medium and large sizes doing repeat duty across the week.

Stainless steel containers for meal prep

Uncoated stainless steel earns its place on durability. It does not crack, chip, or shatter, which matters with kids around or a container knocked about in a bag. It is non-porous, so it will not hold onto turmeric or tomato stains over time, and it is much lighter than a glass container for the same volume.

The limitation is the one we already raised above: standard stainless steel cannot go in the microwave, so food has to move to a separate dish first. This is a manufacturing limitation, not a fixed property of the metal. Glass containers for meal prep

Glass solves the microwave problem outright. Almost every glass container goes straight from the fridge into the microwave with no transferring and no extra washing up. It is fully see-through, so you know what is inside before opening it, and it does not hold on to odours, so last week's curry does not carry into this week's fruit salad.

The trade-off is weight, fragility, and plastic lids. Glass is heavier than steel for the same volume and can crack or shatter if dropped. Most glass also does not nest the way steel does, so it takes up more cupboard space.

One detail worth noting is the lid. A glass base with a plastic lid still puts plastic against hot food every time you microwave it. A glass lid keeps the food zone free of plastic through storage and reheating.

Building a meal prep routine that holds up

Pick one prep day and keep it fixed. Sunday suits most households because it sits between two working weeks, but Sunday is not sacred. The point is repetition. A routine that moves around the calendar every week never turns into a habit; it stays a decision you have to make again and again.

The traditional version of meal prep, cook Sunday and eat the same dish for lunch or dinner all week, sounds efficient on paper. In practice, it is usually where the routine falls apart. By Wednesday, the same healthy salad has stopped being appealing, and takeaway starts looking better than another bowl of the same thing or cooking after a long day.

What actually holds up is mixing what you store. Some containers hold fully cooked meals ready to reheat. Others hold prepped ingredients, chopped vegetables, boiled potato, cooked legumes, and marinated protein that get cooked properly in under 30min partway through the week rather than reheated from one big batch. That variation is usually the difference between a routine that survives past week two and one that quietly disappears.

A smaller, already-portioned container works here too. The larger container does more than one job across the week. Store chopped ingredients ready to cook. Store batch-cooked meals that get decanted through the week. Use it as a tray for baking. Use it for dry pantry storage, or pack it for a picnic, the beach, or a potluck. Built well, one system covers meal prep, batch cooking, everyday storage, and getting food out of the house.

Label everything before it goes in the fridge. A piece of paper tape with the date removes the need to guess whether something is still good on Thursday, and stops the oldest container getting pushed to the back and forgotten (… ah, I totally forgot I had stir-fry), which is where food waste starts.

Stack with the oldest meals at the front. This sounds obvious and almost never happens, since new containers go in first and land in the easiest spot to reach. Move last week's to the front each time you add a new batch or keep them on different shelves, so the meal closest to going off is also closest to hand.

None of this needs to be complicated. The failure point is rarely the plan. It is usually a container that does not seal, stack, or fit what you actually cooked. 

Caring for meal prep containers

Finish matters more than most care guides mention. Powder-coated steel is often sold as dishwasher safe with a hand-wash recommendation buried in the fine print, because the coating can chip or wear with repeated dishwasher cycles, and a chipped coating cannot be repaired. We chose electropolished steel instead, dishwasher safe with no coating to wear off, no hand-wash caveat to work around in daily use. 

Stainless steel is dishwasher safe and low maintenance. Dry it promptly rather than air drying with water in the base, and avoid storing acidic foods like tomato sauce for days without rinsing.

Glass lids are best handled separately from heavier dishwasher items, since a knock against your steel pot can chip or scratch. Avoid thermal shock by moving the container straight from fridge to hot oven or the reverse. A few minutes at room temperature first solves it.

Silicone seals need occasional attention. Food sits in the recess around the seal, which is where smells come from over time. Pull it out to clean every few weeks, and a short soak in diluted vinegar clears lingering odours.

A meal prep routine rarely fails because of your plan. It fails because the lid stops sealing, the container is the wrong size or shape, or reheating requires dirtying a second dish every day. For a household of four, somewhere between eight and twelve containers cover a working week, depending on whether you're batch cooking components (fewer containers, reused across the week) or storing fully assembled meals (more containers, one per dish).
